Tiny hermit crab canvas print
Tiny hermit crab on a sandy bottom
This tiny hermit crab made a very long way as I’ve spotted him about 30 meters from the P29 wreck in Cirkewwa. The size of the crab is about 3cm. This makes him the smallest crab I’ve ever come across. He was moving very slowly and that’s not a surprise. The shell he calls home is way must be too heavy for him. This is a known fact that sometimes hermit crabs choose shells that are too small or too big to their size.
Hermit crab facts
– Hermit crabs are known for using empty shells as mobile homes. They inhabit abandoned snail shells, utilizing them as a protective shelter. As the crab grows, it must find a larger shell to accommodate its increasing size.
– There are over 1,000 different species of hermit crabs, and they can be found in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater environments.
– Unlike true crabs, hermit crabs have a soft, vulnerable abdomen. They use the protective shell not only for shelter but also to defend their delicate rear end from predators.
– Hermit crabs are often seen in groups, especially during activities like searching for shells. They may form a line, known as a “vacancy chain,” where each crab takes the discarded shell of the one in front of it.
– Depending on the species, hermit crabs can live for several years, with some reaching a lifespan of over 20 years in captivity.
