Sea slug

Description of a sea slug

Sea slug are commonly known as nudibranchs. They are basically sea snails, that at some point in their long evolution lost their shells. Their colors is what make them truly stand out underwater. Vibrant pink, white, blue, purple, yellow – you name it and there’s surely a mollusc to match your taste. As with other colorful creatures, sea slugs use their color to warn other predators of their stinging cells.

Their body shapes also vary significantly. From flat, worm like looking tiny creatures, to more traditional species with a distinctive body and head. Sea slugs prey for anemones, plankton and even jellyfish. They use their rhinophores (which is a fancy name for 2 tentacles on their head) to smell their prey. Rhinophores also have an eye usually placed right on top of each tentacle. Sea slugs also have brains, with some species told to hold 20,000 nerve cells.

The difference between a sea slugs and a nudibranchs

Sea slug is a general name for all gastropod molluscs that have either lost their shell as part of evolution, have it in a reduced size or have internal shell instead.

Nudibranch is also the name for a gastropod mollusc that does not have any shell at all. This makes nudibranch only a part of the bigger sea slug class.

However, the names scuba divers are using to refer to these creatures vary according to the location. You will notice that the same mollusc is being called sea slug in one place and a nudibranch in the other. It’s good to know that divers are referring to the same species even if they are calling them differently.
