Description
Punctuated flatworm (Maritigrella fuscopunctata) is often confused for nudibranchs thanks to it’s colorful body. They indeed look very similar from the distance but appear to be totally different species on a closer look. Most punctuated flatworms are hermaphrodites and are the most primitive bilaterally symmetrical animals. Shallow water is the place to look for these guy, read below on where to find them in Malta. Some of the flatworms have the ability to grow their body parts, i.e. use regeneration.

First discovery of the punctuated flatworm was in 2015. These amazing creatures are aliens species to Malta.
A good place to see the punctuated flatworm in Malta is Tug 2 wreck, scuttled in Exiles point in Sliema. The flatworms can be found almost all over the wreck at any time of the year. Generally they occupy outside walls of vessels bridge. It might be difficult to spot them as they are extremely small in size. A flatworm species usually do not exceed 3-4cm in size, so make sure to look out carefully. Please also pay extra attention and do not touch the flatworms. Their fragile body will not survive human contact.
