Nudibranch eyes canvas print
Purple nudibranch eyes
Purple nudibranch in a free fall with her eyes visible right below the rhinophores. That extremely small black dot that is located on the base of her head is her right eye. Thanks to it’s size It might take some time to actually find it. The way nudibranch uses her eyes is different from what one can expect. They are primary used to detect the light and in case of a change – they move from or towards the light source, depending on the species. To actually “see” underwater, nudibranch uses her oral tentacles and rhinophores that allow her to sense changes in the water.
Interesting fact is that certain nudibranchs form symbiotic relationships with photosynthetic organisms like algae, integrating them into their tissues to harness energy through photosynthesis. Some nudibranchs engage in intricate courtship rituals, featuring elaborate movements and chemical signal exchanges, playing a crucial role in their mating behaviors. Also, some nudibranchs excel in mimicry, adopting the appearance of other organisms like sponges or sea slugs. This clever camouflage helps them blend into their surroundings, avoiding detection.
