Description
Felimare, or dorid nudibranchs are colorful gastropod molluscs first discovered and described back in 1967. They are colorful nudibranch species with a size normally bigger than that of a usual nudibranch encountered in Malta. Average size of a felimare nudibranch found in the Maltese waters varies from 5cm to 10cm. Generally these sea slug species are hard to find in Malta. Divers normally have much more luck in finding flabellina affinis nudibranchs rather than the felimare.

Habitat for felimare nudibranch is the Mediterranean Sea and North Atlantic ocean. The nudibranch can grow up to 13cm in length and their coloration changes with age and growth: as the size of the nudibranch increases, the dorsal lines become more fragmented and increase in number. The number of yellow dots in between the lines also increase with age and size. The rhinophores also differ according to the region of the felimare nudibranch. They are dark blue in the Atlantic and violet blue for the species found in the Mediterranean.
Human interaction
This type of nudibranch is considered quite rare to see in Malta. Please be very careful if you spot one and try not to touch or cause any other damage to the nudibranch. They are the soft-bodied animals and don’t have any form of shell to protect them. A rapid and uncontrolled fin movement can be fatal to this nudibranch, so adjust your buoyancy accordingly when approaching.
