Darkspotted flatworm canvas print
Darkspotted or punctuated flatworm
The darkspotted flatworm is an alien species in Malta and Maltese waters. While it is very easy to confuse it with a nudibranch – flatworms are totally different species. This flatworm (maritigrella fuscopunctata) has first been spotted in Maltese waters back in 2015 during a survey conducted by the University of Malta’s Department of Biology. This species is native to Indo-Pacific region. It is very likely that it has been spreading in the Mediterranean from the Red sea.
I took this photo on a Tug 2 wreck in Sliema, Exiles area. This also happens to be the most common place in Malta to spot this flatworm. If you’re diving this dive site, head on to the Tug 2 wreck and make your way to the bridge section. Normally, you should be able to spot these little tiny flatworms cruising around on the floor and the walls of the Tug 2 wreck.
