Dardanus calidus

Description of a hermit crab

Dardanus calidus is better known as hermit crab. It is the most popular type of crab in the Maltese waters. Over the years these crabs have adopted to occupy empty mollusc shells. Their body had adopted too and their abdomen is asymmetrical as a result. Primary reason for desperately seeking for a shell is to protect their fragile body skeleton. It is vital for a crab to seek for a shelter as otherwise they risk end up being defenseless. Most of the crabs can be divided into 2 categories: the aquatic crabs and land hermit crabs. Dardanus calidus falls into the first category as most of his life he spends underwater. Dardanus calidus can be found both in shallow waters and at the deep sea bottoms.

Shells

As the Dardanus calidus crab grows, he required a bigger shell to feel comfortable. Sometimes this might be an issue as shells of a required size are often a limited resource underwater. Upon discovery of a new shell, hermit crab inspects it. If the found shell is too large, the crabs goes back to his old one and waits for new crab to stumble upon the shell. As soon as the new crab arrives, he inspects the shell by leaving his current one and trying the new one on. If it’s too big – the crab would form a queue with the others.

The queue, with crabs aligned according to their size, can reach up to 20 crabs. As soon as the crab matching the shell size arrives, he leaves his old shell and steps in the new one. At that time all the crabs in the queue exchange shells in sequence, each gaining a shell of a slightly bigger size. Isn’t it cool?!

The fight

There’s more – in cases when 2 similar sized crabs find an empty shell – an argument might break indeed! 2 species of Dardanus calidus hermit crabs might start a fight and kill each other to get hold of a especially precious shell. When the shells are not available, hermit crab might use any other available alternative. Any type of debris, cans, bottles – everything would work. However, this might be fatal for a Dardanus calidus crab as he might not be able to get out of it when he needs to.
