Description
White spotted octopus, or as he’s also known – Callistoctopus macropus, is a octopus species normally found in the shallow waters in the Mediterranean. In contrast to his close friend – Common octopus, our guy is always red colored with white spots spread all over his body. The color becomes more intense when the octopus is disturbed. The first pair of arms are way longer than the other 3 and can reach a meter in length. This first pair of arms is also the strongest out of all. Callistoctopus macropus is a nocturnal creature and it feeds at night unlike the Octopus vulgaris, that feeds by day. Just as the other octopuses, female species stops feeding when she hatches and dies soon after this. Average lifespan is very short and ranges from 1 to 2 years.
Observing in Malta
It is possible to spot this octopus at any time of year in the Maltese waters. However, the best time to fully enjoy and appreciate them is the end of the summer. Obviously, since white spotted octopus is a nocturnal creature, the chances are much higher to come across by one during night dive.
