Um El Faroud

History

Um El Faroud wreck is the biggest and the most popular scuba diving wreck in Malta. Bound to Libya, Um El Faroud was a single screw motor tanker. In February 1995 she was set to the dry docks of Malta for maintenance works. Unfortunately an explosion occurred during the night of February 3. This unfortunate even took lives of nice workers. There is a metal plate commemorating the names of the workers just below the ship’s bridge. The vessel suffered fatal damages during the explosion. 3 years later, after a sudden change of plan, the vessel was scuttled as an artificial reef.

Technical information

Um El Faroud boasts a huge 110 meters in length and approximately 16 meters wide. She sits on a sandy bottom at a depth of about 36 meters. A storm in winter 2006 divided the wreck into 2. The wreck has been properly cleaned and all doors and windows were removed prior to scuttling.

Diving the Um El Faroud wreck

The wreck is located next to the coast of the famous Blue Grotto, Zurrieq. It’s a straight swim from the entry point for about 10-12 minutes. Yellow marker buoy is fixed next to the stern of the wreck during summer months. Considering the size of the wreck – there are numerous penetration possibilities. Penetrating the wreck is safe. Single 15 ltrs. tank is enough to see the wreck in whole. However, nitrox is a must should one consider exploring the wreck from the seabed. Nitrox is also a preferred gas for penetration as depth might vary significantly and can easily reach 30+ meters.
