Tug 2
Scuba wrecks in Malta
Malta is known for it’s numerous scuba diving wrecks. They literally surround the island. From shallow to deep ones, accessible from the shore or by boat only. Suitable for recreational and technical divers.. There are even some scuba diving wrecks that are popular among the freedivers, and Tug 2 is one of them.
History of Tug 2 wreck
Tug 2, or as she’s also known – Tugboat 2 is a man-made wreck. She was originally built by Malta drydocks in 1975 for the Chinese Government and named Tuo Lun Er Hao, however, she spent her entire life working in Malta. Later on she had several name changes and ownership transfers. Tug 2 also used to be a tugboat working in Grand Harbour of Valletta until she was acquired by the Bezzina Marine Services in 2000 and docked at Bezzina shipyard. In June 2013, after she was cleaned from all the dangerous parts, she was stuttled as an artificial reef in Exiles, Sliema. Her sister ship – Tug 1 is still working as a tugboat in Valletta Grand Harbour.
Scuttling of Tug 2
Tug 2 was scuttled at a depth of about 22 meters parallel the reef. However, couple of years later, in autumn of 2016 a storm moved the wreck onto the reef. The wreck seems to be intact since then, with the bow being stuck on the reef. Luckily, she suffered no further damage and is still intact.
Marine life
Generally, there’s not much marine life around the wreck. You can expect some groupers, hermit crabs and common rays some distance apart from the wreck. However, there are some good news for underwater photographers. Tug 2 is known to be a good place to spot purple nudibranchs. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but one can almost always expect to find them attached to the wreck. Moreover, Tug 2 is the only easy accessible dive site, that is a home to a punctuated, or darkspotted flatworm, who are alien species in Malta.
Diving the Tug 2
Tug 2 is easily accessible from the shore and the ladders are fixed in place for easy access. The dive site is located next to one of the most popular dive centers in Malta – Dive Systems and is considered their home wreck. Measuring 22 meters at the deepest part, Tug 2 wreck is also very popular among freedivers. You can also expect to see some diving boats anchored over the wreck in summer months as some dive centers offer this wreck as a boat dive.
