Tonna galea canvas print
Tonna galea on a sandy bottom
Tonna galea – also known as giant tun. It is noticeably larger than the usual shells that one can spot underwater. it actually is about the same size as an adult man head. Another difference from the usual shells is that the mollusc inside is almost always visible.
The species are widely present all across North Atlantic ocean, Mediterranean and Caribbean seas. They prefer shallow waters, but can still be found on the depths of up to 100 meters.
The best time to looks for tonna galea in the Maltese waters is August/September, when these beautiful creatures come out to play on a sandy bottoms.
This photo was taken on a night dive in Marsascala bay, right in between the 2 tugboats that are scuttled in the area. During that dive, I was lucky to spot around 5 of those giant tuns in the space of 10 minutes. All of them were heading towards one of the wrecks, probably looking for their food – sea cucumbers.
Wonder how the shell of tonna galea looks from the inside? Look no further – wikipedia has a great x-ray image of it.
