The stern of Um El Faroud

Description

The stern of Um El Faroud is the first thing the divers will see when diving this amazing wreck. The wreck is facing north-west, which makes the stern the first thing to appear out of the blue after about 10 minutes swim from the entry point in Zurrieq. The depth at the stern is approximately 18 meters, while the bottom depth is around 36 meters. Due to the depth, this view is only available for deep certified or tec divers.

History of Um El Faroud

Um El Faroud is the largest wreck in the Maltese islands. It used to be a Lybian motor tanker. She suffered an explosion back in 1995 when undergoing maintenance works at the dry docks in Malta. 9 people lost their lives back then.. She was scuttled shortly after the incident as a divers attraction and to server as an artificial reef.

Penetration

The wreck offers numerous penetration possibilities at several levels. Before scuttling she was properly clean of all the dangerous items, so penetration is considered safe. However please take extra precautions when diving in an overhead environment. Having no immediate access to to the surface carries a number of risks. Only experienced and certified divers should attempt this wreck penetration.

Marine life

Um El Faroud is a home to numerous sea creatures. Apart from the usual dusky groupers, moray eels, divers can spot a barracuda hunting around the wreck. Recently, a family of trigger fishes were spotted hovering above the chimney as well. It is also common to see some rays on the seabed around the wreck.
