Santa Marija caves are a unique cave system located on the northern part of island of Comino. Thanks to it’s shallow depth, the dive site is very popular among all levels of divers and snorkelers. Maximum depth will barely exceed 10m, and will remain even lower during most of your dive.
Santa Marija caves is an interconnected cave system, that consists of numerous caves, caverns and a grotto. The dive usually starts at the grotto, which stretches about 30 meters inland. A short swim north from the grotto will lead to a cave, with a possibility to surface. While it is possible to surface inside the cave, a good diver should take usual precautions when diving in a closed overhead environment.
After exiting the cave, keep left and you reach yet another cave. The cave gets narrower as you continue your swim through. At the exit you’ll come to a Z shape exit. This is exactly where this photo was taken.
Since the dive site is very popular during summer months, be very careful when surfacing at the end of your dive. Numerous pleasure and diving boats anchor in the area, sometimes crating chaotic traffic.
