Santa Maria cave canvas print
Santa Maria cave
Santa Maria cave system is one of the most beautiful cave systems in the Maltese islands. It is located in the north of the island of Comino. There is no access to the dive site from land which makes it a boat only dive. The dive site gets pretty busy during summer months so beware of the passing and anchored boats when surfacing.
The Santa Maria cave system consists of numerous caves, grottos and swim throughs. The maximum depth will not normally exceed 10 meters making this dive site very popular among snorkelers.
The dive starts opposite the grotto – that’s where the majority of boats anchor. After the grotto there is a cave, where a group of divers can surface for a quick chat. The photo was taken at the entrance to this cave. Next, there is another cave that gets narrower as you continue your swim through. On your way out of the cave you’ll face a Z (Zorro!) shaped exit.
Finally, after the last cave all that is left is to get back to your descend point. Keep an eye out on Banded sea breams that patiently wait for divers. This is another attraction of the dive site. Banded sea breams have learnt through the years that divers feed them with bread. If you opt to and bring some bread with you – make sure not to leave your plastic bag behind!
