Description and history
P31 wreck is yet another patrol boat scuttled in the Maltese islands. She used to serve in the Maritime Squadron of the Armed Forces of Malta since 1992. Notably, P31 was used to secure Maltese borders from smuggling. Her other 2 sisters are P29 that lies in Cirkewwa, and P33 that has been destroyed by the heavy storm in Marsascala. She was transferred under the jurisdiction of Malta Tourism Authority in 2004. 5 years later, in 2009 she has been scuttled next to the coast of Comino island. P31 wreck is of a medium size, with a length of around 50 meters. She sits on a sand bottom at the depth that do not exceed 20 meters.
The wreck
P31 wreck is a boat dive only. Yet, it is a very popular dive site during summer month. Expect to be met by other divers when you’re there. Thanks to the shallow depth, the wreck is suitable for all levels of divers, including the Open Water qualified. The wreck has been properly cleaned and prepared for divers attraction. As a result, P31 wreck can be penetrated from stern to bow.
Diving the P31 wreck
Diving the P31 is easy. Thanks to the shallow depth, you can expect to explore the whole wreck in one go. Generally there is not much to see around the wreck. However some rays might be spotted around, hovering above the sandy bottom. Please do exercise great caution when surfacing. Boat traffic is very heavy during summer months with multiple self-drive touristic pleasure boat passing just above the wreck.
