MV Xlendi wreck

History

MV Xlendi is a former passenger ferry belonging to the Gozo Channel company, that presently operates ferry service between the islands of Malta and Gozo. She was decommissioned and scuttled next to the south coast of Gozo, at Xatt l-Ahmar in November 1999. However, while scuttling, the whole wreck ended up touching the seabed upside down. As a result – the deck and everything above has been destroyed by the incident. Presently the wreck is closed for penetration as it is considered to be unsafe and unstable. There are multiple warning signs put up next to the wreck reminding all divers about this.

Present days

Nowadays, MV Xlendi is just one of the 3 wrecks in the area. Another 2 being the very popular MV Karwela with its famous staircase. The other one, less famous is MV Cominoland. All 3 wrecks are diveable from the shore, however, please be aware of the decompression limits. All 3 wrecks lie at the depth close or exceeding 40 meters. It is recommended to dive one wreck at a time, if diving on a 21% mix. Lucky divers with DPV’s and using nitrox might catch up 2 wrecks at one go.

Diving MV Xlendi

The dive is pretty straightforward. Take a 200 degrees compass bearing from the entry point for about 5 minutes. The wreck is 80m long, so it will be hard to miss it. Swim around the wreck observing the state and power of it. Don’t forget to keep an eye on your deco time as MV Xlendi is the deepest of all 3 wrecks – the depth might reach 45m at some point. It’s also worth mentioning that there is a nice car wreck about 5 meters north from the wrecks center point.
