Hephaestus

History

Hephaestus is the newest addition to Gozo wrecks family. Hephaestus is an oil tanker that ran aground during the storm of 2018 in Qawra, Malta. Interestingly enough, the vessel hit the rocks on the occasion of St. Pauls shipwreck, which hit St. Pauls island nearby. 2 years later it was decided to scuttle the vessel for diving pleasure. Initially, the plan was to put her at rest off the north coast of Gozo. However, the plan has changed and Hephaestus now lies next to 3 other wrecks in Xatt l-Ahmar, Gozo. Three other wrecks are MV Xlendi, that lies upside down, MV Karwela, famous for its staircase and MV Cominoland. Hephaestus is an awesome addition to the wreck family of Gozo and is definitely most welcomed by the divers.

Description

Hephaestus is about 60 meters in length and about 8 meters wide. This is a shore dive, however due to a long surface swim, it is better dived from the boat. There are numerous penetration possibilities in the wreck, however most of them are at 40 meters deep. The dive is a recreational dive, yet Deep diver speciality is highly recommended since maximum depth of the wreck is 46 meters. Respectively, the deck is at around 38 meters and the bridge is 33 meters deep.

The dive

The dive is suitable for experienced divers only thanks to its depth. Take a straight swim for approximately 100 meters from the Xatt l-Ahmar bay towards the bouy that is affixed next to the wreck. In 10 minutes the shallow reef will drop to 30+ meters. Continue swimming forward for approximately 5 more minutes until you face the bow of the wreck. The size of the Hephaestus wreck might not allow you to see all you want in one dive. Consider using Nitrox or do this dive as a technical one.
