Hephaestus wreck canvas print
Hephaestus wreck
History of the wreck
The Hephaestus wreck is the latest wreck scuttled in Malta for divers. She was an oil tanker that hit the ground during the storm in 2018 in a coastal city of Qawra. Couple years later, when the decision was made that repairs are too costly for the owner, it was decided to pass the wreck to divers. After a number of location changes the wreck now lies south of Gozo in a place called Xall l-Ahmar. This place is very well known to divers for the other 3 famous wrecks: MV Karwela, MV Xlendi and MV Cominoland. Hephaestus wreck is a great addition to the existing wrecks family.
Description of the Hephaestus wreck
Hephaestus wreck is about 60 meters in length and approximately 8 meters wide. The wreck can be both dived from the shore or by the boat. The latter is much recommended since there is a long surface swim – the wreck lies 200+ meters from the shore. The Hephaestus wreck is opened for penetration but this must be an option for experienced divers only. The reason for this precaution is the depth that the wreck lies at. the wreck lies at 40+ meters and all the penetration opportunities would be at the 40+ meters mark. One should be certified to a PADI Deep diver (or equivalent), or better be a TEC certified diver. TEC divers would undoubtedly get much more bottom time and more penetration possibilities. Please also keep in mind that the maximum depth at the bottom level is 46 meters for this dive.
Diving the Hephaestus wreck
There are 2 options when it comes to diving the Hephaestus wreck from the shore. The first one is to surface swim towards the wreck from the Xatt l-Ahmar main parking. This option is easy but takes considerably more time since the distance you would need to cover is approximately 300 meters. The other option is head left from the Xatt l-Ahmar parking and start your dive from a shallow bay there. Set a compass bearing to the marker buoy that is secured above the wreck. Then slowly follow your compass right above the reef that will lead you straight to the wreck.
In about 8-10 minutes you should start seeing the bow of the Hephaestus wreck.
