Ghar Lapsi cave

Location

Ghar Lapsi is located a few kilometers away from the quite Maltese village of Siggiewi. It is a small and picturesque bay which is very popular among locals in the summer months. Ghar Lapsi is situated on the same southern coast as the Blue grotto. It is only 2.5 kilometers away from the Um El Faroud wreck. There are also a number of restaurants in the area that enjoy the sea and Filfla island view. However, at the time of writing (2023), one of them has been demolished. The area is also known for it’s hiking trail, that spans along the rocky coast in eastern direction for approximately 2km.

The cave

One of the lesser know features of the area is an underwater cave. The cave is wide and is approximately 40-50 meters in length. One of the unusual characteristics of the cave is it’s height. Maximum height barely reaches 2 meters, with most of the cave being 1 meters or less. This makes a cave in Ghar Lapsi one of the flattest caves in Malta. Moreover, there are many cracks in the ceiling and a number of exit points from the cave, that on a sunny day create unique, spectacular views. The cave is a must-visit for any underwater photography enthusiast.

Diving Ghar Lapsi cave

The dive starts at a depth of around 3 meters. The entrance to the cave through a very narrow tunnel, so be careful not to scratch the rocks above you or your dive equipment. Follow through the cave to the exit point of your choice, based on your qualification or restricted environment diving confidence. Certainly pay attention to all the light rays passing by the cracks in the ceiling. They create truly awesome scenery in the cave. Passing through the cave should not take more than 5 minutes, and you would end up in the open sea upon your exit. There are multiple options from that point: either heading southwest for the finger reef, or heading southeast for the middle reef. Both dives are considered to be shallow ones since the depth should not exceed 20 meters.
