Coral shrimp canvas print
Coral shrimp
Description of a coral shrimp
Coral shrimp is also known by its proper name – “Stenopus spinosus”. It is a very common shrimp in the Mediterranean and in Maltese waters particularly. Being bright orange in color, the shrimp stands by its name – Coral shrimp. The fact that divers are more likely to spot them at night makes that already bright orange even brighter! This shrimp is commonly found inside caves, cavers, below huge boulders and as mentioned before – during night dives. Coral shrimp prefers hiding out of the sight during the day and only come out at night to search for its prey.
The shrimps body only grow up to 8 centimeters, however, the shrimp will look bigger thanks to the feelers, or antenna, that can grow much bigger than the size of the body. The antennae and the tips of the claws are often white colored. Most careful divers should also be able to spot the red/brown eyes and red tips on the uropod and the telson, which is the tip of the shrimps tail, if translated to English.
Photo opportunities
Coral shrimp is a very slow moving species which is an absolute joy for underwater photographers. Divers carrying huge (and not so!) cameras underwater can expect the shrimp to pose for quite a while, leaving enough possibilities for that awesome shot.
Shrimp cave
While divers might not spot these shrimp straight away, there are actually plenty of them hiding underwater. There is even a cave in the island of Gozo named after these majestic species – Shrimp cave. Shrimp cave is a place where you can expect to see a whole bunch of shrimp at any given time.
Species
Apparently, this shrimp shrimp is not actually a shrimp in the traditional sense. Coral shrimp is a shrimp-like decapod crustacean belonging to the infraorder “Stenopodidea”, according to Wikipedia.
