Unlike the common eagle ray, common stingray is a very often occurrence in Maltese waters. Common stingrays can be spotted playing in groups at a shallow depths all year round. it is more likely however to spot a single stingray rather than a group of stingrays. Another species that are present in Malta underwater are bull rays or torpedo rays. Bull rays have similar to eagle rays body shapes and can look the same from the distance. However if you are lucky enough (since bull rays are considered extremely rare in the Mediterranean) to see one – look at his head first. Bull ray’s head is a good mix of a bull’s and ducks head. They are even called duckbill ray in South Africa.
Sandy bottoms next to the shipwrecks around Malta is always a good place to look for a common stingray. It is also possible to find one on the green algae patches in dive sites like Ghar Lapsi. Generally, a chance of seeing a stingray is high, especially if you practice patience. Some of them might just be passing by out there in the blue, keeping the distance from divers.
It’s always nice to spot a stingray during the dive. Normally they don’t interact with scuba divers and prefer to mind their own way instead.
