Common stingray image canvas print
An image of a common stingray
It’s always a pleasure to an image of a common stingray. It is also a big pleasure to see a common stingray underwater yourself. Yet even bigger pleasure is to take a photograph. It takes some effort to do that unfortunately. These (relatively!) small guys tend to swim away as soon as they see diver approaching them.
This is one of the most common type of ray divers can expect to see in the Maltese waters. But don’t expect to see them at every dive as this is unlikely to happen! A good place to look for common stingrays are sandy bottoms of course. P29 wreck in Cirkewwa, Um El Faroud wreck in Zurrieq, the tugboats and P33 in Marsascala are all good places for ray-spotting.
Another area known for having higher chances to spot rays is Ghar Lapsi. On your way from the Ghar Lapsi cave it is very likely that the dive will head to the area known as the middle finger. The are is mostly covered in posidonia grass and this is exactly where common rays love to rest.
