Common eagle ray canvas print
Common eagle ray
Eagle rays are quite an uncommon occurrence for Maltese waters. You are likely to spot a Common stingray rather than the eagle ray on your dive. Eagle rays normally prefer deeper environment hence it is rare to spot them on recreational depth levels. This guy has been spotted by me during a dive next to Migra Ferha, at a depth of around 50 meters. Main difference between common eagle ray and other type of rays is of course the body shape. The body of eagle ray is a well defined rhomboid shaped in oppose to the stingrays oval-ish, round-ish body type. Another distinctive characteristic of a eagle ray is the long tail.
Another species, that common eagle ray might be confused with is the Bull ray. Both rays have similar body shapes and can look the same from the distance. However if you are lucky enough (since bull rays are considered extremely rare in the Mediterranean) to see one – look at his head first. Bull ray’s head is a good mix of a bull’s and ducks head. They are even called duckbill ray in South Africa.
Sometimes eagle rays like to cruise in shallow waters on depths of up to couple of meters. Depending on the ray size, It’s wings might break the water at this depth This sight could be confused with 2 sharks or dolphins from the surface.
