The bow of Um El Faroud motor tanker

Description and history

The photo shows the bow of Um El Faroud – the largest wreck in the Maltese waters. She used to be a motor tanker registered to Libya. Back in February 1995, during maintenance works in Malta dry docks, and explosion occurred taking lives of 9 workers… As a result, the wreck was scuttled as as a diving attraction 3 years after sitting in the dock. At present she also servers as an artificial reef.

Location and precautions

The wreck now sits round the corner from the famous Blue Grotto, in Zurrieq at a depth of 36 meters. However, it is now broken in two – thanks to the storm in winter 2005/2006. The stern and the bridge make one part and the deck and the bow of Um El Faroud make the other. Please do not attempt visiting the bow of um El Faroud on a single 12ltrs tank. Most likely this will not be enough and you will end up with no air. Remember, apart from getting to the wreck itself (normally takes around 10 minutes) you would need to swim additional 115 meters to reach the bow. Occasional currents in the area can make this swim quite difficult.

Getting there

This is the largest wreck in the Malta, with the length of 115 meters, and it’s definitely the most popular one. It is a good advice to come to the dive site early, especially on weekends. The amount of parking spaces available for divers is very limited and some of them could be occupied by fishermen that fish in the area. There are also tourist pleasure boats passing by in summer, so take additional care when surfacing. Ideally have your SMB ready for emergency cases.
