Description
Blue hole is one of most popular dive sites in Gozo, Malta’s sister island. It is located meters away from the former world famous Azure Window that collapsed on March 8, 2017. The hole is a rock formation approximating around 5 meters wide and 10 meters in length. It is sheltered from the rough sea making this dive site very popular when the south-west wind picks up. The dive site is also very popular among swimmers, snorkelers and freedivers. Maximum depth in the blue hole does not exceed 16 meters making this dive site a good choice for least qualified divers.
Access
Access to the dive site is fairly easy and requires a 5 minute walk from the parking in Dwejra. There is a rocky path that leads to the blue hole and it’s shared with the tourists and swimmers, so expect some traffic there during summer months.
Diving the Blue hole
Upon descending one can find a cave in the eastern direction. Pay attention to the cave walls as it’s full of corals. Exiting the cave presents very photogenic views with all hues of blue. Another opening in the opposite direction leads to the remains of Azure window. Numerous swim throughs and large boulders is something a diver can expect to see. Blue hole is definitely worth paying a visit if it’s your first time diving in Gozo.
