Billinghurst cave canvas print
Billinghurst cave
Description of the cave
Billinghurst cave is situated in the Malta’s sister island – Gozo, next to the Xwejni salt pans. It is the largest cave found in the Maltese islands and is definitely a good dive for more experienced divers. Billinghurst cave is approximately 100 meters in length. The cave bends right at about 60 meters in. This creates a unique atmosphere for the remaining part of the cave since no light penetrates there. There is an airlock at the end of the cave where divers can surface and have a quick chat. When surfacing inside the airlock – breathe through you regulator!
Diving the Billinghurst cave
Please make sure you have adequate training before attempting this dive!
Maximum depth in the cave should not exceed 25 meters and is generally around 15-20 meters. The entrance to the cave is wide and deep, so you get to see the whole awesomeness of Billinghurst cave straight away. The depth gets shallower towards the end of the cave where the airlock is. Underwater photographers would appreciate exiting the cave, with the exit point fading in from the darkness as you approach it. The light creates beautiful scenery and it is a great opportunity for some very cool underwater photos.
Please pay extra attention to the entry/exit point. The area next to the entrance is known as the washing machine, and it is named so for a reason. Sometimes, even the smallest waves can create havoc and make exiting the water impossible. For that reason always keep another 30-40 bar left so you can keep swimming on the right hand side of the reef and exit at another dive site – Reqqa point.
