Description
Wied Bassasa is one of the least popular dive sites in Maltese Islands. While it’s located right around the corner from the Blue Grotto, on the southern side of Malta – there is no direct access to the site from the shore. Hence Wied Bassasa is a boat only dive. Maximum depth should not exceed 30 meters, unless you head out into the blue in search of the marine life. In this case the depth can easily reach more than 40 meters.
The dive at Wied Bassasa
Dive itself is a cave dive, with a possibility to surface mid-dive for a quick chat. The dive can be accomplished in 2 ways. One way is a having your entry point being also an exit point. This way you enter on a south-eastern side, swim all the way through the cave and turn around when you see an exit to the west of you. The other is a swim through dive, where you will enter the cave on the south-eastern side and exit on the west side. The photo was taken right next to the west exit point.
Dive site features
Being a cave dive with 2 large entry/exit points facing different directions, this dive offers awesome photography opportunities. Generally the waters there are crystal clear presenting a diver with all hues of blue. If you opt in for surfacing in the middle of the dive, take some time to admire the huge rock dome above you. There is generally not much marine life present in the cave, but this is totally compensated by the fantastic views of both entry/exit points against the blue background. Also make sure to look out into the blue before entering or after exiting the cave. Rare marine life inhabitants might head your way since it’s a very unpopular dive site.
